The Witches’ village

This is the name given to the picturesque village of TRIORA where one of the most famous witch trials was held in 1556. On that occasion, 13 women were accused of witchcraft for having caused the famine that hit the village the previous year.

Instead of condemning them to the stake, it was decided to incarcerate them for life, in order to slow down their agony. Their story inspired the creation of the Ethnographic and Witchcraft Museum on what was said to be the women's prison.
