Where does the word "CIAO" come from?

"CIAO" is the Italian national greeting, now also in common use internationally. The informal greeting "CIAO" derives from the dialect term "sciao" which, in turn, derives from the Latin "sclavus", and means "slave/servant".

The greeting originally had a much more formal tone and meant: "your servant", "to serve you"...
