The Pollino National Park is the largest protected area in Italy. Established in 1993, it extends over 192,565 hectares, embraces Calabria and Basilicata and involves a population of approximately 170 thousand inhabitants, distributed in 56 municipalities of the two regions. Its  specific symbol is a particular type of pine, one of the thousand-year-old trees (the oldest is 1280 years old) that success to live where other species could not.
